Volunteers

Help Wanted!

The MVFS is run entirely by volunteers, and new help is always welcome.

Set your own schedule-once a week or once a month, and stay to see the movie for free (not required) and chow down on the equivalent of $5 worth of concessions- on us!

There are three functional areas, box office, concessions, and projection.

Box office volunteers are asked to be at the theatre an hour before show time to assist with set-up.  Duties mostly entail the sale of admissions for that that days screening, but will also include the sale of posters, t-shirts, memberships, and answering patron questions, and simple bookkeeping.

Concessions help requires being at the theatre 75 minutes before a screening for preparation and set-up.  Help enhance our patrons movie experience by selling concessions before the movie and cleaning up the concession and seating areas after the movie.

Projection volunteers will be fully trained in the use of our 50 year old 35 mm projector, and are NOT required to work by themselves until they feel fully comfortable with their duties.  You will also be trained to operate our DVD projector and learn a bit about the sound system.  A mechanical aptitude is helpful, but certainly not required.

Projectionists must stay for the entire film, but do not participate in the set-up or take down of the film itself.

Concession and box office volunteers do not have to stay for the movie, but are encouraged to do so to assist with clean-up of the auditorium afterward.

After 6 months as a volunteer, the possibility of taking your ‘movie career’ even further exists.

A Theatre Hosts act as an ad hoc theatre ‘manager’ for screenings of their choice.  They arrive early and make sure that everything is ready to go by show time.  This may mean that you will be needed to fill in for box office or concessions (not projection) in an emergency.  A board member is always on call for any questions that arise.  Hosts must stay for the entire screening and also are responsible for counting out the funds for that shows admissions and concessions, and closing the theatre.
If you have even more spare time, you can also consider becoming a board member.  Board members do all of the above (projection training is NOT required, except for the DVD player), and also partake in the day-to-day operation of the theatre.  There are once a month board meetings and board members are also asked to partake on two committees- promotions, operations, programming, and finance/fundraising.

Please note that being on the board does NOT give you carte blanche to start selecting films. Input is appreciated, but in general, that committee is very stable and capable, and our greatest need is for people to help in promotions and fundraising.

Board members do receive one ‘perk’ after one full year of service.  A set amount of funding is offered for each board member to attend a film festival of his or her choice.
